Frequently asked questions
-
NO! You do not need a referral for an assessment or followups with us
-
As physiotherapists, we are trained to understand muscles, joints, fascia and movement! The pelvic floor has striated muscles that are under our volitional control, just like our biceps muscle. The pelvic floor muscles need to function at an optimal tension to keep us continent, support our pelvic organs and function during day to day activities. If these muscles are too short and tight it can lead to pelvic pain, urgency, frequency and lack of control. If they are too long and weak, they can lead to incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. A simple explanation is that Pelvic PTs help teach your muscles to function optimally to support you in daily activities!
-
On average a client with urinary incontinence or prolapse will attend 3-6 sessions. Clients with pelvic pain, urgency/frequency often attend about 8-10 sessions. Each person is unique and we base the sessions on their individual needs. We understand that cost can be a barrier and we try to work with each client within their financial means.
-
If you're nervous about an internal exam, we can do exams without internal assessments. If you consent to an internal exam, our goal is to make it as comfortable as possible. The pressure with palpation should feel the same as it does if you were to press down on your forearm. It should not be painful. We continually monitor the client's response to the assessment or treatment and will stop the exam or treatment at any time. The client is in complete control.
-
Most clients have a home program to follow that supports treatment they receive. However, each client has a different needs in their life, schedule and exercise desires so we work with each client to find what works best for them.

There is a LOT of things we do pre and post partum at the clinic! We wish we could see each woman before she delivers-it gives us a good idea of pelvic floor health, strength and coordination. We can help with back and pelvic girdle pain. We prepare for labour and delivery with perineal massage and breathing. Research shows that perineal massage helps reduce perineal tears for the first vaginal delivery. Postpartum care involves re-evaluation of the pelvic floor, mobilization of scar tissue, rehabbing pelvic floor strength and abdominal coordination. Our main goal is get a woman back to her previous functional level of activities and sport. This includes return to running, crossfit or the gym being leak free and pain free. It also includes getting back to functional activities such as intercourse when she is ready!
-
YES! We are still able to do a full assessment with your consent
-
ALSO YES! You absolutely can still attend a session during your period. We can do external work only that day or if you are comfortable with it we can still do internal work with extra precautions.
-
Pessaries come in many shapes and sizes. The device fits into the vagina and provides support to vaginal tissues displaced by pelvic organ prolapse (Mayo Clinic)
-

-
