The Role of Nurse Practitioners in Ontario
Megan Dunn, NP-PHC - December 2024
My Journey in Healthcare
My journey in healthcare began in the hospital, where I worked as a registered nurse, primarily in adult ICU and emergency care, as well as neonatal ICU. My time in the hospital was invaluable—I gained diverse experience, learned from and collaborated with passionate colleagues, and supported patients and their families during some of the most vulnerable times in their lives.
While I enjoyed the excitement and adrenaline rush of working in critical care, after almost 10 years, I was ready for a change. I completed a Master of Nursing degree with a specialty in Primary Health Care, and for the past six years, I have been working in primary care and have discovered my passion for health promotion and disease prevention, particularly with a focus on women’s health.
Nurse Practitioners in Independent Practice
While many NPs work in publicly funded healthcare environments, others operate independently. These independently practicing NPs, like myself, do not have access to public funding at this time. As a result, patients are required to pay out-of-pocket for services or seek reimbursement through private insurance plans. Unfortunately, this limitation stems from the way healthcare funding is structured in Ontario.
OHIP coverage is tied to publicly funded healthcare facilities and physicians. While NPs employed in these specific positions may be funded, independent NPs do not have access to the same resources. While this may create a financial barrier for patients, it also creates an opportunity for NPs to offer specialized and personalized care. Many people find value in the accessibility, expertise, and patient-centred focus that independent NPs provide.
What We Do at All Things Pelvic
At All Things Pelvic, I offer a variety of primary care services, including women’s health, weight management and metabolic health, perimenopause/menopause and hormone therapy, and preventive care for patients without a GP. My goal is to provide individualized, evidence-informed care that supports women through all stages of life. Whether it’s managing chronic conditions like PCOS or hypothyroidism, navigating menopause, or addressing weight-related health challenges, I take a holistic, empathetic, and collaborative approach to care.
